Experiences with Asphalt Concrete Sealings at Drinking Water Dams for more than 50 Years On June 27 2003 Aggerverband celebrates 50 years of operation of Genkel Dam, a 44 m meter high rockfill dam with an upstream asphalt concrete lining. Genkel Dam was one of the first German drinking water dams with asphalt concrete as a water barrier. Several dams followed in Germany like Wahnbach Dam and Perlenbach Dam. Later on the technical development lead to rockfill dams with cores of asphalt concrete. The Wiehl Dam was the first one for drinking water supply. Again other dams followed like Große Dhünn Dam. Up to date there are 22 drinking water reservoirs with asphalt concrete sealings under operation in Germany. They proved to be very reliable structures with no maintenance when constructed as core sealing and little maintenance when constructed as upstream facings. The water quality is solely depending on the influent water to the reservoir. There has neither been influence of the asphalt concrete nor of the mastic on the water quality. No diseases attributable to asphalt concrete have been observed during all the years of operation. In any case, asphalt concrete is without effects on water quality.
